Case Background:

Mrs. Saraswathi and Mr. Venkatesh have a two year old son, Janeshwar, who was born with Cardio Respiratory Failure at Chengalpet Government Hospital. It is a critical medical condition in which cardiac arrest eventually leads to respiratory failure. Mr. Venkatesh works as a server in a small hotel and earns about INR 5000/month. He is the sole earning member of this family and so was caught in a helpless situation when he was advised to take his son to a private hospital for further treatment.

Ekam’s Involvement:

Dr. Sathya Jaganathan, who is the Nodal officer at Chengalpet Government Hospital, understood the family’s situation and referred the case to Mr. Krishnamurthy, who works as Project Coordinator there. Soon after, the baby got shifted from Chengalpet GH to Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital(KKCTH) and was admitted at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The baby received medical treatment under Dr. Rahul Yadav, who heads the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at KKCTH and was discharged after 21 days of hospitalization. Ekam helps raise funds for the child’s treatment.
Hospitalization costs Rs.1,73,470/- and child trust hospital given Rs.86,735/-(50% subsidy).

The following donors helped EKAM to pay the hospitalization cost:

1. Shridi Sai Trust – Rs.20,000/-
2. Social Investment Foundation of India – Rs.11,000/-
3. Rs.53,735 paid through EKAM emergency fund.

Current Status

Janeshwar is now 1.5 years old and is growing as a healthy child with his family.
